Je dis à tous mes clients : un gilet de sauvetage gonflable mal entretenu est un fardeau. C’est le principal point de différenciation entre un gilet de sauvetage de type III et un gilet gonflable.

Vérifier le témoin vert : à chaque sortie. Il est impératif de vérifier que la bouteille est armée.

Remplacement de la cartouche : l’élément détecteur d’eau se dégrade avec le temps (l’humidité a un impact). Il doit être remplacé tous les 1 à 3 ans, même en cas de faible utilisation.

Période de péremption du CO2 : les cartouches en acier peuvent se corroder. Si vous constatez de la rouille, le gilet est inutilisable.

Coût de réarmement : à chaque gonflage, un kit coûte entre 20 et 40 $.
Pour les familles soucieuses de leur budget et de la simplicité, le coût récurrent et la charge mentale que représentent les structures gonflables en font souvent un mauvais choix. Si vous n'êtes pas du genre à lire le mode d'emploi, optez plutôt pour la mousse.
Normes de sécurité pour les personnes âgées et les débutants
Pour la pratique du kayak de loisir et la natation sportive, et plus particulièrement pour les débutants plus âgés, je déconseille fortement les gilets gonflables manuels. La panique est une réaction physiologique qui prend le pas sur la logique. Lorsqu'un débutant entre en contact brutal avec l'eau froide (choc thermique), le réflexe de suffocation se déclenche. Trouver et actionner la commande à ce moment précis demande une motricité fine qui s'estompe souvent.
De plus, remonter à bord d'un kayak est physiquement exigeant. Une vessie gonflée sur la poitrine est très encombrante – bien plus volumineuse qu'un gilet en mousse – et peut même rendre la remontée sur un kayak sit-on-top plus difficile, car elle vous éloigne de la coque.
La règle Mason Trek : Si vous n'êtes pas un nageur confirmé capable de vous maintenir à la surface pendant 10 minutes sans difficulté, utilisez un gilet de sauvetage standard en mousse de type III. Quand choisir : les différents scénarios
Analysons cela en fonction de différents cas d'utilisation pour vous aider à prendre votre décision.
Choisissez la mousse standard (type III) si :

Choisissez le gonflable (type III/V) si :

Vous êtes un pêcheur passionné : Vous avez besoin de mobilité pour lancer et remonter le poisson.

Vous vivez dans des régions chaudes : La ventilation est essentielle pour éviter la surchauffe.

Vous êtes un bon nageur : Vous êtes capable de gérer une défaillance ou un gonflage manuel.
Vous le portez en permanence : Le meilleur gilet de sauvetage est celui que vous portez réellement. Si le gilet en mousse est si inconfortable que vous le laissez sur le pont, achetez un modèle gonflable.
Le choix entre un gilet de sauvetage de type III et un gilet gonflable dépend avant tout de vos habitudes. En tant que professionnel des activités de plein air, je reconnais la qualité technique des gilets gonflables, mais je fais confiance aux propriétés physiques de la mousse. Pour la plupart des pagayeurs de loisir, notamment ceux qui privilégient le respect des normes de sécurité relatives aux gilets de sauvetage et la facilité d'entretien, le gilet en mousse standard reste la référence en matière de fiabilité.
Cependant, si l'encombrement d'un gilet en mousse vous empêche de le porter, le gilet gonflable est alors le meilleur choix, à condition d'en assurer l'entretien. Quel que soit votre choix, assurez-vous qu'il soit homologué par les garde-côtes américains, qu'il soit à votre taille et qu'il reste bien en place. Ne naviguez jamais sans gilet.
